When the death of 21-year-old Trey Reed became national news, the cameras arrived—and so did Ben Crump.
Activists invoked Mississippi’s history of racial lynching before anyone had identified a lyncher, produced evidence of an assault or established a racial motive. Crump publicly called for truth, transparency and an independent autopsy.
But nearly one year later, Trey Reed’s relatives say Crump stopped responding to their calls—and they still have not received a final independent autopsy report.
Now the family has disclosed another critical piece of evidence: messages were reportedly sent from Trey’s phone the evening before his death, including one stating that he intended to hang himself. Reed’s mother has questioned whether Trey personally sent those messages, but their existence raises serious questions about the racial narrative promoted across social media.
