A WALMART EMPLOYEE REPORTS SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTING... AND NOW SOMEBODY IS THREATENING HIM?!
Y'all, you cannot make this foolishness up.
In the aftermath of the tragic death of one-year-old Kohen Wiley in Senatobia, Mississippi, police bodycam footage revealed a Walmart employee alerting officers that two women were running from the store.
But apparently, reporting suspected theft is now considered a betrayal by some people on social media.
One Facebook commenter went so far as to blame the employee for Kohen's death, suggest he should have accepted money or SEXUAL FAVORS instead of notifying police, and threaten him with violence.
Excuse me?! So now the person reporting suspected wrongdoing is the villain, while the person publicly threatening him is supposed to be defending justice?
**WHEN DID DOING YOUR JOB BECOME SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE THREATENED FOR?**
In this episode of Unshakable with April Chapman, we're examining the outrageous Facebook comments, the accusations of snitching, and the dangerous mindset that treats reporting suspected wrongdoing as racial betrayal.
And we're going to discuss something else: What happens to communities when stealing is excused, honest work is ridiculed, and accountability becomes the enemy?
Let's be clear. Kohen Wiley's death was a tragedy. Whether the police shooting was justified is a separate question that deserves careful scrutiny. But that does not make it acceptable to threaten a Walmart employee for alerting police.
**IN THIS EPISODE:**
- The Walmart employee who alerted officers to suspected shoplifting
- Social media reactions to the released bodycam footage
- A disturbing Facebook comment threatening the employee
- Why the commenter believed the employee should have looked the other way
- The accusation that reporting suspected theft amounts to racial betrayal
- Retail theft, business costs, and personal responsibility
- Why a culture of accountability matters
We can mourn an innocent child's death AND condemn threats against someone for doing his job.
