President Trump reportedly wants to make it easier for married families to have one parent stay home with their children—and culturally, I LOVE the direction. But economically? Hold on.
The Trump administration is reportedly considering a rule change that could allow certain married families with a stay-at-home parent to receive roughly $9,000 per child annually through an existing federal child-care subsidy program.
And apparently some conservatives think I'm supposed to start jumping up and down because the government check has “family values” written on it.
No ma'am. I absolutely believe motherhood matters. I believe children benefit tremendously from having their parents deeply involved in their formative years. I was a stay-at-home mom myself when my children were young, and my husband and I made real financial sacrifices to make it work.
But here's the conservative question:
Why should government take our money, run it through Washington, attach rules to it, administer another federal program and then hand some of it back to us?
How about you just LET FAMILIES KEEP MORE OF WHAT THEY EARN?
In this episode, I'm breaking down the reported Trump proposal, why I appreciate the pro-family goal, why I'm skeptical of the subsidy, what Democrats object to, and why I would much rather see greater tax relief for married families than another government check.
Because a government entitlement doesn't magically become conservative just because Republicans are handing it out.
Family values? Absolutely. Government dependency? Hard pass.
