New York congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier says she is excited to “build black socialism” within the Democratic Socialists of America. Well…at least they're saying it out loud now.
Chevalier defeated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District while campaigning on policies including Housing for All, Medicare for All and abolishing ICE.
But what exactly is “black socialism”—and why is socialism suddenly being marketed through the language of racial and economic justice?
As someone born and raised in New York City who grew up around government-subsidized housing, I have some thoughts.
In this episode of Unshakable, I examine the sales pitch behind “black socialism,” the history of government dependency in America's urban communities, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign and Resurrection City, and why putting the words “racial justice” in front of an economic ideology doesn't automatically make it liberation.
You can change the packaging. You can change the slogan. You can put a bow tie on it.
But we still get to examine what's actually inside the box.
