I almost went to jail when I was 18 years old. I was a freshman at Spelman College, newly transplanted from the Bronx, driving my mother’s Ford Taurus station wagon through Atlanta without a driver’s license. After making an illegal U-turn on Northside Drive, I saw the blue lights behind me and immediately knew my life was over.
The officer could have arrested me and impounded the car. Instead, he lectured me, frightened me, gave me a court date, and told me I had 30 days to get my license.
I had it within a week.
That encounter taught me something important about authority, correction, and consequences.
Today, too many police officers, parents, educators, and authority figures are afraid to offend people. Instead of correcting foolishness, they placate it. Instead of speaking clearly, they tiptoe around bad behavior. Instead of helping people mature, they practice what I call toxic empathy.
In this episode, I explain why correction is not cruelty, why authority figures must stop being afraid to tell the truth, and why sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is confront someone with reality.
