One-year-old Kohen Wiley lost his life after a police officer fired into a vehicle during a confrontation in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi. But what happened in the moments leading up to that tragic shooting?

Police were alerted to suspected shoplifting. A vehicle reportedly struck a parked car, officers ordered the driver to stop, and shots were fired during the confrontation. Kohen, who was being held in the front passenger seat rather than secured in a child safety seat, was fatally struck.
His mother has denied stealing, and the shooting raises difficult questions about police use of force, parental responsibility, and the decisions that put an innocent child in danger.
Here's what I want to know: Why was this baby in the front seat? Why didn't the vehicle stop? And why is it so difficult to discuss personal accountability when tragedy strikes?
We can grieve the death of an innocent child while still examining the conduct of the adults involved. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
