In this episode of Unshakable with April Chapman, I’m responding to Killer Mike’s emotional framing of the Rick Chow case and the tragic death of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton.

Now let’s be clear: any time a young person loses his life, it is tragic. But tragedy does not give us permission to abandon facts, twist the narrative, or pretend every complicated case fits neatly into the same tired racial script.

This case was not simply “an Asian store owner shot a Black child over water.” That framing leaves out major facts — including the presence of a gun, the alleged threat to the store owner’s son, and the legal question of whether this was murder or an attempt to prevent the loss of life.

But beyond the legal conversation, there is a deeper cultural conversation nobody wants to have: Why are 14-year-olds walking into stores with empty backpacks and guns? Where are the fathers? Where is the discipline? Where is the training? Where is the shepherding of our sons?

Killer Mike wants to cry about how “they” treat “us.” But maybe it is time to ask how we are raising, discipling, correcting, and preparing our children to show up in the world.

Because accountability is not racism. Accountability is love with a backbone.
