I went to Ocean Springs, Mississippi because I wanted something the national racial grievance industry apparently isn't very interested in: the truth on the ground.

For weeks, the death of Nolan Wells has been surrounded by questions, insinuations and increasingly racialized commentary involving figures including Ben Crump, Al Sharpton and Jamal Bryant.

So I came to Mississippi myself. I met with attorney J. Tyler Cox, spent time with members of the community and families connected to Warren, Jax and Morgan, and began looking firsthand at Ocean Springs, Horn Island and the circumstances surrounding this case.

And let me tell you something… The Ocean Springs I encountered looks nothing like the backwards, racially hostile caricature some people desperately seem to need Mississippi to be.

This is a diverse, tight-knit Gulf Coast community filled with people who know one another, look out for one another and are now watching three young men's names and reputations become entangled in allegations and insinuations they fiercely dispute.

Something tragic happened to Nolan Wells. Truth demands that we determine what happened without manufacturing villains simply because a racial narrative requires them.

And now, with Al Sharpton facing a threatened defamation lawsuit, this story may be entering an entirely new phase.
