More than 500 incoming Howard University students were suddenly told they had lost their places in the fall class after missing financial deadlines. Some students insist their scholarships and financial aid were already pending—or that their accounts should never have shown unpaid balances in the first place.
The students deserve empathy. But they also deserve something more valuable than empty reassurance: the truth.
As a former Spelman College student and proud HBCU dropout, I know firsthand what it is like to choose a “dream school” without having a fully funded plan. I also know the financial-aid confusion, administrative chaos, long lines, unanswered questions, interrupted semesters, and mounting debt that too many HBCU students are expected to treat as a normal “character-building experience.”
