A Florida pastor who previously worked in a middle school and later served as a hospice chaplain has been arrested after authorities say he met a 14-year-old boy online and sexually abused him on three consecutive days.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Timothy Chaneyfield allegedly continued communicating with the child through Instagram, failed to disclose his HIV-positive status, and later admitted to sexual activity with the minor during questioning. Investigators fear there may be additional victims.
This story is horrifying—but it also raises a question the American church cannot keep avoiding:
How do men with deeply corrupt private lives gain positions of spiritual authority?
Too many churches choose pastors based on charisma, popularity, fundraising ability, musical talent, or preaching style while treating the biblical qualifications of 1 Timothy 3 like optional suggestions. Scripture, however, requires an overseer to be above reproach, self-controlled, respectable, and well thought of by outsiders.
A gifted speaker is not necessarily a qualified shepherd.
In this episode, I examine the allegations against Chaneyfield, the responsibility of churches to vet and oversee their leaders, the danger of silencing legitimate concerns, and the urgent need for parents to know who is communicating with their children online.
Churches must stop protecting titles at the expense of sheep.
