Former Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown is headed to federal prison after pleading guilty in a COVID-relief fraud conspiracy involving her and her two daughters.

Federal prosecutors say the women fraudulently obtained more than $146,000 in pandemic-relief funds—and approximately $15,000 went toward Brown's lavish 50th birthday party.

But when the case first came down, Brown claimed politics were at play. And THAT is where we need to have a conversation.At what point do we stop allowing race, gender, politics and “community” to become shields against basic accountability?

Because taxpayers deserve better. Voters deserve better. And the Black community deserves leaders chosen for character and competence—not symbolism.
