How many times are we going to celebrate somebody becoming the “first Black woman” to hold an office before we stop and ask a much more important question:
IS SHE GOOD AT THE JOB? Representation matters. But representation is not competence.
Identity is not character and becoming a “historic first” does not exempt anyone from accountability.
The controversy surrounding Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield got me thinking about a much bigger issue: our obsession with celebrating racial and gender symbolism before evaluating worldview, judgment, character and actual performance.
And before somebody deliberately misunderstands me — no, my argument is NOT that Black women should not be in positions of leadership.
My argument is: PICK BETTER. Stop lowering the standard because someone looks like you.
Stop assuming racial representation automatically means good representation.
And stop acting as though criticizing the conduct of a Black female politician is somehow an attack on Black women.
We're going to talk about political “firsts,” character, presentation, accountability, personal redemption and what the gospel actually teaches us about having a past.
Historic symbolism doesn't govern cities.
People do. And those people should be held to the SAME STANDARD as everybody else.
